Who doesn’t want the power of data?
Management love their metrics and for good reason: “What gets measured gets done.”
The problem is, no data tells good from great. Quite the contrary, actually. Pay too much attention to data and, before you know it, you will miss the point of it all.
No data tells good from great.
Don’t get me wrong, data is a good thing. Used properly, data informs and validates what you do. Without data, you are in the dark.
But then, if you are lucky, you will come across someone exceptional. Someone with heart and taste. Someone with a deep appreciation for detail. Someone who makes it clear it’s not about numbers.
Great transcends data.
Of course, use data. Just remember, data is not the thing. Above all, follow your heart and cherish the subtle and the intangible—the essence of great. Do so and all the data will follow.
